«..I have observed plenty of lessons in 15 years, and I noticed that something I often have to say to my teacher trainees as a way of encouragement is «You are better than the book».

It does not mean that I find course books useless. Modern course books offer stimulating tried and tested resources to support your teaching. However, the main disadvantage of them is that they are standardized and not written for YOUR students…»

The participants will compare the T-fronted approach to presenting vocabulary with the Test-Teach approach with the help of a demo. The teachers will become aware of the main principles of presenting vocabulary and also focus on ways of introducing and clarifying the concept, good drilling techniques and board work organisation.

11.45 — 13.15

Managing the classroom in vocabulary lessons This is a highly practical session where the participants will have a chance to try out the techniques demonstrated in the demo lessons.

13.15 — 14.15 Lunch break

14.15 -15.45

Teaching grammar in English The workshop demonstrates effective ways of presenting grammar in English. By the end of the workshop, the participants will be better able to plan and execute language-based lessons. They will observe, participate in a demo and unpick it. As a result, they will have become aware of the main stages of the lesson and principles of using the whiteboard to make the concept, pronunciation and form clear. The teachers will also analyse various types of practice tasks.

16.00 — 17.30

Managing the classroom in language based lessons (grammar) In this practical session the participants will try out the techniques demonstrated in the demo lessons and create different types of grammar practice tasks

DAY 2 SESSIONS (14/10/18) Audience: experienced teachers

9.30 — 10.00 Registration

10.00 — 11.30

Moving beyond comprehension question tasks Modern course books offer stimulating and informative reading texts to support your teaching. However, their main disadvantage is that the reading tasks the books suggest are mostly standardized and limited to the level of comprehension. The session will focus on alternative ways of exploiting reading texts to the full. The goal is for the participants to walk away with concrete ideas for their own classes.

11.45 — 13.15

Exploring reading texts for lexis In this session, the participants will analyse reading texts as a valuable source of high-frequency lexis. Focussing on collocations and chunks from reading texts can potentially help students who do not have enough exposure to English outside the classroom. It can also prevent or cure the influence of L1 on the students’ language production. The teachers will have a look at various ways of revisiting reading texts for useful lexis and developing the students’ ability to use this lexis in their own contexts.

13.15 — 14.15 Lunch break

14.15 -15.45

Exploring reading texts for grammar The workshop will demonstrate the advantages of the text-based approach to teaching grammar. The participants will revisit the reading texts they have just read to notice how grammar is used in the context and will try to deduce the meaning of unfamiliar grammatical items from the co-text. The participants will take away a number of practical techniques enabling the students to practise the target language in a meaningful way.

16.00 — 17.30

Personalising reading texts Experiencing and discussing some of the text-based activities designed by the presenter, those attending the workshop will take a look at an alternative way of teaching, where English is taken outside the classroom and the use of English becomes an indispensable element of students’ life and just a matter of code-switching.
